Weathers cold, wet, and when you can find some loam all those things equal damn good riding...

With that in mind me and a couple of my mates Si and Jimmy hit up this track and did a bit of building, few full runs and I did a bit of shooting to try out a few ideas I have had in the editing department.

I just got Magic colour grading software, so wanted to try that out, I know this is a quite a heavy grade but Its what I had in mind. I also wanted to try working slightly more carefully with audio which if you listen carefully to a few shots in this I have tried to do. More of that to come in my show reel soon...

Summer Euro road trips and the Capital...

Bit of a using up whats left in the fridge kind of post now...few photos that I shot with my shit old stock lens and my old D90 while on the road in Europe for a month this summer just gone. France,Italy,Switzerland,Germany etc between a few races, 5 of us in 1 van all with bikes etc, good times!

Anyway, few photos from that trip, just snap shots really but show what its like on the road and a bit of where I went that month, and then a few photos I took while in London the other week just after the London Bike Show. I was mainly shooting timelapeses but also shot a few normal photos here and there...So like I said, nothing bike related really, but just some nice photos that didn't seem to fit anywhere else...

Bit of recent published work/Tear sheets...

Going to be doing a few of these posts over the coming weeks with everything that's been in print over the last few months, but in this first one is a lot of the work I have done for Saracen Bikes and Genesis bikes over the last few months.

As any of you who follow my work will know I worked with the Madison/Saracen DH team a lot this last season and so have had a lot of work go in to the new 2012 Saracen Catalogue. I saw it for the first time the other day down at the London bike show and I am stoked on it. The graphics guys at Madison always do a great job at making my images look there best and this is no different. Shots from a few shoots and races over the year went in, so take a look at some of them...

With the passing of another year you hear everyone saying " how fast that went" " this year ill eat less,ride more" etc etc

I wont give you any of that , instead I will give you the best part of 10 mins of what made 2011 such an awesome year for me...

Thanks to everyone who made this year as good as it was, everyone who shared lifts across Europe with me, was in front of my lens and rode with me along the way, To all my clients old and new, and to anyone new friends I have made.

Locals2 - Part 1 now online

This winter/off seasonI have been filming an extended web video/film with a few of the UKs top mountain bikers, the title I have given this project is Locals2.

Last off season ( 09/010 ) I did Locals(1) , that focused on my local riding scene around the South West, but I realised the limited scope of this both riders and story wise so for Locals2 went with the thought process of exploring a few of the best riders Locals, there home life in the off season, training, riding,party's, mates etc

Danny Hart, Josh Bryceland,Sam Dale,Alex Bond, Joe Smith, Olly Wilkins, Harry Molloy are the main riders, everyone from Wchamps, to up and coming riders so something for everyone.

The film went live up on Pinkbike who supported the project a good 2-3 weeks ago, but I have, as ever, been a bit busy and this blog is bottom of the list of things to keep on top of at the moment.

I have a new website in the works which should be changing that last point...

Locals2 - almost here....

I'm not even going to bother saying sorry for not posting on here for ages, I would love to post on here every day but I just have to much to do to keep this thing updated for the most parts ha

I will try and be better, its me not you etc etc

Anyway this is a post about the fact my second extended web video project Locals2 is almost ready to go live.

With support from Pinkbike, J-Tech and Banshee so far and a riders list including Bryceland,Hart,Dale,Bond,Wilkins etc its look good so far...

The first part should be online either tomorrow or sometime this coming week and will have sections from Bryceland and Dale, Bond and Smith and Wilkins...Anyway for a bit of media which is, I guess why your here:

Once again sorry for not updating this thing for a while, but IM not really to sorry because the reason for it is that I have just been really busy working, which is a good thing. Anyway I was down at Madison HQ last week doing a few days work and found a few trade brand catalogs with a good deal of my shots in so thought I would take a few shots on my phone and get them on here. Wanted to call this post "bikes,boards and beats" but the tacky detector in my head wouldnt let me haha

Over the last few weeks I have had the chance to shoot a few events that are a bit out of the norm for me. Freeze snow sports festival in London and a Hospitality club night in Oxford. Now I like watching snowboarding etc, and like going to festivals, so this one was a bit of a no brainer, take the camera, have some fun, shoot some photos. DONE. Put that with a great night out after in London and seeing one of my filmer/biker mates who's at uni there and that's that.As for the Hospitality night in Oxford, that was something I have wanted to do for a few years. For those that know me I'm a huge drum and bass head, go to a load of these nights all over so getting a VIP pass for one, shooting photos of some of my fav artists was pretty sweet...Then was a BMX road trip round Cornwall with a load of 30-40 year olds. Loose as shit and great fun...to busy drinking to take many photos as this was mainly a holiday but I cant do a holiday without taking a few photos ha Anyway have a look below for a few of my favs and a bit about them:

This is the official launch and announcement that Locals2 is born!

Last off season I made Locals , it went down really well and got over 50k views for the whole half hour main feature and another 30k for the trailer...and it only had my mates from Debom in...

Locals2 is a step up in every way, I really wanted I would want to watch even if I lived on the other side of the world, so I have got some of the top riders in the world, along side some More unknown pinners from Danny Hart right through to Josh Bryceland and Al Bond to name but a few...

But here are a few of my fav shots from the week up in Wales shooting with Bond and bit about them...

This is Als House! and yes that is a caravan haha For someone so dedicated to racing and training he lives in a pretty wild place. Like putting half your living room and a bed in the middle of a rickety old barn haha

Joe Smith also came along to the shoot for a few days, the film for the most part is riders in pairs. Riding with their friends and just having fun, and these 2 ride a lot together.

This log was a great feature to shoot, but Joe deffo made it look the best, the photo of what happened when I asked Al to try and scrub off it will never leave my computer for the sake of his reputation as a good bike rider haha

Right this is probs one of the most epic places we could have picked to shoot photos, I said to him I wanted to shoot some epic shots with some great landscapes in, they don't really need a track just need you riding a bike somewhere rad, he took me here. It was raining, cold and hard to ride but fuck, it looks good doesn't it?

Another shot from the water fall, this is more of a riders one. Love the tones, the epic landscape and the riding looks good as well...

Al carving up some loamy tracks on Bala at the new revolution bike park. great morning light and a good willing rider make for some great shooting.

Another one of those spots that doesn't really have a track, there are some on this hill thought just dropping off the back of the hill behind where I'm stood with the camera. But being there at sunset we just had to shoot some photos..." ride through that puddle and wheely drop off in to those slick minging rocks over and over again yeah?" "OK "


Sam hill as the shot above, nice portrait of Al looking out over Wales after a flat out 3 days solid shooting, the day after this was the final of the BDS where he would win by 3 seconds on a 1:30 track and take the BDS 2011 over all...

So yeah, that was the first look at Locals2, should be good, cant wait to get some More stuff filmed, so far we have Bonds section all filmed, and most of Josh and Sam's done, but going up for another day shooting with them next week and also shoot with the wild man himself Adam Brayton...

More news when I have it.

Few summery bangers from this season...

I was going though all the 1000s of photos on my many hard drives earlier on looking for a few photos of specific people. Its a boring task but one I have to do pretty regularly. One of the only plus sides is getting to see all the photos that other wise will never get seen ever again. OK so these arnt those photos, most of these have already been online in one way or another, some though haven't.

I just saw these and thought I would do a bit of a post saying why I like these photos, where, when they where taken and anything else of note about each image.

From various races over the last season from BDS races to WCs... Take a look and let me know which is your fav in the comments bellow and I might put it up full res for desktop backgrounds...


Marc B - Molfre. BDS Rd 2 at the start of the season, hot, dusty,fast, and a hard track to shoot.This is one of the only shots from the weekend I was really happy with and the only one that made it in to my favs of 2011. The track tape, the rider, his stance, the light all just came together.

This is a shot of Brook McDonald from NZ tearing up Val Di Sole. My fav track of the year hands down for shooting ( as I'm sure you can guess from this post ) and one of my fav shots, like the light, the movement, the rider...pure summer racing....

Danny Hart, the man of the moment smashing through the top rock fest at Val. Some shots work in BW some don't, I think the texture and harsh light in this make it work...I like the other riders watching on as well, all looking right at him.

Greg Minnar ( again Val ) , you can see the photographers that go to all of these things from a mile off. they all flock round the patches of light and not the big jumps. I was right next to the one and only Gary Perkin shooting this, nice patch of sun opened up right on top of this little rock garden. Shot a few riders come through but none got it quite as agro as Greg.

Gwin. Pinned.Trying to get lost in all the trees. What more needs saying?

One from BDS 3 at Llangollen. Tyre kicking up a bit of dust going down the steep hill. Nothing special but sometimes its the simple details that tell the story.

Matti L. Has quite possibly the worst luck of any rider, when is he not in hospital with multiple broken bits? heal up mate your rad to shoot and from all I have been don't deserve to be all broke...


The Rat on the same turn at Ft Bill as Matti above. Don't know why I went for BW with this one as he is in the red kit, I think it could be the texture and tones. the light, and the fact its pin sharp. I feel its still a great shot despite the lack of colour.

Greg again on the top slopes of Ft Bill...Nice shot showing the Loch and hills in the background, bit of a pan to show the speed and even a slight bar turn.

This ( or a slight edit of it ) is my personal current background. I love it, the man himself, in the stars and stripes, dust, pinned,sharp,focused,number 1 plate...love it!

My mate Mr Rich T. Fellow SW rider and pinner. Had a bit of a mare of a season but should be back on top form come 2012 and I for one cant wait. Here he is looking race as fuck at BDS 3 in the sun...

Rach Atherton at FortBill...Don't know why I like this one, think its just all the trees adding depth to the image. Why isn't she doing a huge scrub though?!

The most bow legged mother fucker on the race scene, Jack Reading. Had a great season with some storming results. Don't know whats going on in this photo though, he isn't trying to knee everyone he passes?

Another one of Ratty, this time in Wales at Llangollen. Love the sun glinting off his lid and the fact his body position just screams speed.

Another one of Jack as well, This one from Leogang. God I miss summer and it isn't really even winter yet...

The most elusive man of the last few season. Mr Hill. Always seems to have something better to do than his job. He is a hardly any of the races and yet still is seen as some kind of god. He is pretty rad mind...


The last shot, a nice Pano from the edge of the woods at Llangollen from the Nat Champs. I'm going there and saying its my fav venue in the UK hands down as a shooter. I know the uplifts wank and you would be better of trying to crawl up on your belly but look at it...what a hill!

Well that just about finishes off this post. This blogs getting a bit like the buses, nothing for yonks then tones at the same time. I might give it a rest for a few days...Probs not though...

My gear...

For quite a while now I have been asked to do a post on the gear I use...

I have put it off and off as I believe that gear isn't as much of a factor on your work as you are...Give someone who can use it a camera phone and a total novice a D3s and see who's photos look best...

That aside I thought I would sum it up, and say where I think my next upgrade will be coming from, from here on its going to get a bit nerdy, so if you don't like geek speak click back now haha

Bags:

They go everywhere with me and house all my gear, they get lugged up mountains, dragged through airports and thrown in cars and vans the world over and keep all my shit in a pile so to speak...

First up is the F-stop Satori, the big bag that holds all the shooting gear, the one that comes up most mountains with me and that I use day in day out at all races...work horse, fits everything in,comfy,not broke yet...

Next up is the Lowe Pro flipside 500 A, I use this bag for all my other gear, GoPros, cables,chargers,laptops,spare flashes and spare back up body ( being in a different bags just common sense ) and also when I need to ride for any distance on a shoot as its much smaller and lighter than the Fstop...

Shooting gear:

( excuse the shite photos, taken on my phone as to have all nice cameras in the shot )

This is what I use at the moment, if you read at the end of the post I will outline what my plans are with regards to upgrades etc

The shooting kit:

From left to right we have:

Nikon D90 with 18-70 ( back up stills body )
Nikon D300s with 80-200
Canon 550d with 15mm fish ( filming camera )
2 Nikon SB800 flashes with some PW2s for triggering
50mm prime, spare battery's

few small tripods for flashes, Rode Mic and LCD viewfinder, lens cloth and blower... that's what goes in the main bag most of the time along with a few other small bits and bobs...

Cables/Misc

We have in the hard case in the photo, film gear, spare flashes and triggers, few flash softeners and diffusers and some cables, then there is all the chargers for everything, various travel adapters, all the gopro stuff with enough mounts etc, hard drives and cables for back up on the move , good set of headphones for editing with, and the bag of misc junk...

The other stuff:

Now there is a bit missing from this photo, few more stills tripods but they are in the car and I couldn't be bother to go get them for this photo, just cheap 20 quid tripods , also the rails for the dolly, and the Astars tog jacket, coat and boots ( vital bits of gear )

But in the photo is a good sturdy golf umbrella, Manfrotto tripod for filming, the dolly cage and the laptop ( Quad core, 6gb ram, 1gb graphics , 750 HDD etc for editing everything on the go )

So that is in a nutshell the gear I use to shoot everything...there are other bits and bobs that I use but 90% of its here.

New camera?

Now you may wonder why I use both Nikon and Canon cameras, and its simply thanks to the fact Nikons camera suck for video. So I run a Canon with an adapter and run all my Nikon glass. This is a bit annoying so if the rumors of a new Nikon camera out this winter come to fruition then I will sell the Canon and go back to a full Nikon system if the video specs are up to scratch. Now depending on if this new camera they may or may not bring out is full or cropped sensor will also decide what new wide angle set up I get...but that's all pie in the sky till we know what the new cameras like...

I was sorting through the back catalogue of images on my hard drives earlier on this evening and came across a few photos that missed the cut the first time round... so thought I would put them up on here along with a few shots of my mates riding one of the local skate parks the other evening on what is bound to be one of the last days of the summer of 2011...bring on the rain!

Now a bit of info on each image...

All taken with natural light only ( apart from the one of Mears )

My mate Chris airing out of the quarter down at Saltmill in Saltash. A great skatepark with great views, perfect park to shoot photos of, and with the low evening light even better... Mr Brunels work in the background...

Random guy in the woods and dust at the WC finals in Val Di Sole. No idea who he is but love the light and dark and the texture, and the fact he looks like he is shifting...

Miami after winning the Llangollen round of the BDS, a good race for him on a good track, Josh took 1 and his best mate Sambo took 2nd...few snaps of him in the pits after...

Local pinner down at Saltmill Jacob Sykes boosting out of the quarter and jumping over the Tamar bridge, good effort!

How to get your work noticed?

I think I get asked this on an almost daily basis by someone...

I don't know why they all come to me, I'm sure all the other pro MTB photographers out there get asked the same questions and it made me realize just how luck I am to be doing what so many others obviously really want to be doing...

Anyway lets go in to why I'm guessing your here, the how...

Its not a straight forward formulaic thing, there is no set path for going from unknown to work in magazines and adverts but there are a few things that you can do to up your chances...

First thing is shoot lots. Shoot everything that moves ( and a lot of stuff that doesn't as well ) still life,portraits,landscapes etc, some people have a better eye for different subject maters. Your bike photos might always look a bit poo, but if you try shooting portraits you might find your calling...

Second is sharing your work. Having it all hauled up on your HDDs is all well and good but if no one see it, it probably wont get to much attention.

Get on the forums in your field, get a facebook, twitter etc In bikes, Pinkbike, Southerndownhill, Mpora, Vitalmtb etc are all huge sites and great for pushing your work out there...

Only share the very best of your work! If you share everything even the sub par you will dilute the bangers with dross and so blend in to the hundreds of other people trying to do exactly the same thing you are.

Once you start to get noticed its just a case of keeping doing whats working and being professional and learning from mistakes. For me anyway it just seemed to snowball, getting a bit of a name as someone to watch is the hardest and first step, once you achieve that it all fell in to place and small work offers started coming along...

That's pretty much what I did, and it seems to be going alright so far. Two years in to being full time and showing no sign of slowing down...

The new WideOpen mag...

Being the staff shooter for wideopenmag.co.uk is great, some where I can throw any images that don't seem to fit anywhere else, they might not even make it in there, but its nice to be so involved in such a great project. With each and every issue of the magazine it seems to just get better and better, more and more slick, the same great content and all for free via your PC...win win ?

Anyway the new issue came out a few days ago and has a fair bit of my work in from various shoots and events from the last few months including interviews with Danny Hart and Josh Brycland, BDS rounds, NASS, The world champs, The cover etc

Bond, Alen Bond - New edit and photos

Last night quite late we ( wideopenmag.co.uk and I ) flicked the green switch on my latest edit shot in Morzine a few weeks back between the La Bresse and Val Di Sole WCs with Alex Bond.

The main reason we went out shooting was to get some photos to go with his CV which is being put together at the moment ready to send out. He has had a great season in 2011 after getting his head down last winter and doing some training, 2-3 podiums at BDS races with some stacked Fields, 2nd at the Nat Champs and a top 20 at a WC... all as a full privateer!

So I thought the least I could do was shoot some photos for him, we also ended up shooting a few clips of video, mainly to show the other guys later that night, but the video kinda took over the day some what and we came out with possibly my favorite edit I have put out this year...

Shot all in 1 day on the super Morzine track Hatchet, and some of the more secret new loamy tracks on the pleny, using the 550d with adapter ring and Nikon lens's

And the ever trusty Manfrotto tripod...you may notice in a few shots what look like crane shots but that's just clever use of the tripod...

Val Di Sole - WC finals 2011

The last 3 ish weeks have been some what of a blur...

A blur of Vans, Motorways, bikes and pixels...Obviously not literally, or I wouldn't be doing my job very well would I!

Anyway Last year I loved shooting at Val Di Sole, the weather, the track, the dust all just made for some great images, and this year was no different...

If you read this thing at all regularly you will have been seeing my daily photo updates on all week, but for those that missed it here are a few of my favs that got posted up throughout the week... for more check out the site via the link just above...

4 days at home to enjoy my Birthday ( which I very nearly forgot ha ) and to catch up on the more boring side of work before heading back off to the Alps for the Worlds in Champery then up to the BDS finals in Ft Bill!

I know I start a good deal of posts here with some kind of apology for not posting more, so I thought why break tradition with this one haha

Busy travelling, working, and when I’m not doing either of those things riding, writing blog posts has taken somewhat of a back seat as of late.

Anyway I thought I would come back in with a bit of a banger of a post...

As you may have noticed I never seem to post many images up from races, this is because magazines and websites won’t run or pay you for photos that have already been seen by the masses. So most of the time the images sit on my hard drives for months on end doing abosolute sweet FA.

National Champs

Back from a pretty hektic weekend shooting the British Nat Champs up at Llangollen.

A mint track with the most insane top woods ever with the fast steep open bottom section,good weather, better company, and to top it all off a sweet edit and some good photos...

Keep an eye on the new MBUK and WO for a few of the better shots from the race, will try get a few more up soon though...

Right been a pretty good few weeks, busy with work, with just enough free time to ride my bike in between. The perfect mix ?

Anyway, started off with me doing a few days work down in MK for Adventure bikes and Easton Mountain Products, still deep in the editing for those jobs, then it was off to NASS...

Now for those that don't know NASS is an extreme sports/drum and bass festival down in the southwest that me and my mates have been to the last 2-3 years ( I forget )

Its lots of raving, bit of hung over riding, few photos and a lot of really shit food...but great fun.

This shot was with the 80-200, at 80mm trying to just the flowing mounds leading you down through the shot from the rider...All natural light

This one was shot just before sun set hence the sick light, again the 80-200 but this time more around the 115mm mark...

This was on the 50mm , near wideopen, bit of music, think its Tinne Tempah but to be perfectly honest I cant really remember it...so yeah, that's that!

Good weekend had by all...

Next up on the list of things to do is a shoot for Certini bike shop of one of their riders and mate of mine Jay Williamson, so that should be good, and then team WideOpen is hitting up all my local trails for a bit of a weekend road trip so expect more photos and half cut ramblings from that, then its off round Europe for a month for the Nat champs, 2 WCs, a week in between then the Wchamps then BDS finals... GO GO GO!

Right, long old drive back from north Wales last night, got in at 1am, up at 7am to start sorting through the 1000 photos ( good weather makes me a tad trigger happy haha )

I think Llangollen is fast becoming my Fave track to shoot, Cant wait for next months Nat Champs when we get to go in the woods a bit as well...

Anyway back to the BDS Rd 4 just gone...as per none of my best shots will be going online for a little while yet, some are going on the new WO and MBUK though so keep an eye on them...

How I went from Spare time --> Full time photographer

One of the questions I get asked on a regular basis is how I got to where I am, how I went from amature photographer to it being my full time job and earning a living from it...so I thought I would answer that in this blog post.

The whole reason I started taking photos was because I wanted to see how I was riding...So lots of photos of my mates down the local woods, and the local resident pro Ash Mullane who I still shoot now...that coupled with a great growing local scene gave me the reason and story to get my work out in front of a wider audience via websites, forums etc as FB wasn't really about when I first started.

Few photos from back in 2006 both taken in the first week of having my first ever camera...

From there on I started working with wideopen , I have been involved since day Nil and got the cover shot of issue 1...staff photographer to this day and 15 issues later still going...

It was through putting work ( only the best of my work ) online via websites like SDH and in Wideopen that helped me get noticed, make contacts with riders and keep upping the quality of my work.

Everything just seemed to snow ball from there, not through luck at that stage more through pure determination, fun and hard work. Back then I did it just for the fun, didn't make any money, worked a paper round to get to the races and snap photos and was just stoked to see them online... I slowly got more and more into it, my photos started getting on more and more sites, i started going to a few nationals, then a few of the Ft Bill WCs...

As I got more and more involved in photography, my grades in school dropped as I knew it was what I wanted to do, and when your faced with swatting for exams or going out doing what you love and getting paid for it on top, it wasn't to hard of a choice...

So in a very simplified bullet point list this is how I did it...

Invested in a DSLR
Shot ALL the time of my local scene/woods/mates and put the best of the best online
Started getting work on websites/in online magazine etc
Started going to races, regionals at first then slowly to nationals then WCs
Started getting more of a name as someone to watch
Work in a few paying places ( small companies, magazines etc )
Work for bigger magazines and companies
Left school after A levels and went full time as a self employed photographer/film maker...

So that's how I did it, by no means the proper way with uni, work experience etc but it seemed to work for me...got any More questions leave them in the comments bellow...

The last few weeks have been pretty flat out for me, busy tripping round Europe following the races. After the last update on here I have been out to Austria to the 3rd round of the WC in Leogang. A great race, great track and even better riding ( I got a run or 2 in on the bike as well )

The last few weeks....

This blog is going to start just like so many others...sorry for not posting anything for a while. It seems a bit like busses on here, shit tones all at once or nothing for a little while.

Theres good reason for this though, I have been tripping round between races for the last 2 weeks and have only now found some half decent reliable wifi and power that has conicided with some time in Leogang Austria for Rd 3 of the WC this coming weekend.

Anyway first off was GlenCoe BDS, got called off thanks to truly shit weather...

Few site updates...

This blog gets updated fairly regularly. I try to make a point of updating it with fresh content all the time as its one of the things I don't like to much about a lot of other photographers web sites/blogs.

Anyway My website itself gets a bit ignored, but not for much longer, with a bit of a redesign on the horizon making it easier for me to edit it all I will be keeping on top of it much better...

But in the last week or so there has been a few little updates worth mentioning, mainly in the social networking department...

So first off we have added a FB like bar at the bottom so you can quickly and easily share it if you like it, there are also all the icons in the bottom right corner to flickr,FB,Twitter,Vimeo and youtube...so go find me and add me on there to keep up to date on all of those.

I then gave the video page a bit of an update with some more recent work for a few different people, and made all the videos hosted on vimeo to neaten it all up a bit...

Theres also some fresh new work in the "Wedding" gallery on my site, so if you haven't already go check that out.

3 Bits of advice...

There are lot of things I get asked on a pretty regular basis, and one that keeps popping up is what advice would you give to an aspiring photographer who's looking to try and make some money doing this...

There are all the normal bits of advice that go with most kinds of business, be polite, work hard, do the very best you can etc... they all go with out saying, its just common sense.

I think the 3 things that have got me to where I am now are these though...

Shoot as often as you can

Get out and take photos as much as you can, try all the buttons, try things out, learn by making mistakes. So many people are scared of failing, but without failing when it doesn't matter and theres nothing riding on it is how you learn, and quite often how you stumble across things that look really good. Work out what your doing wrong and don't do that thing again, if something works out well, work out why so you can do it again.

Shoot what you want, how you want

Shoot what you have a passion for. If you really have a passion for something and understand it that will show in the photos. Second shoot it how YOU want, not how someone else is doing it. Yes copy people you admire, but not exactly always add your twist. If your work looks exactly like someone Else's work, why should people look at yours?

Look at other peoples work

Look at other photographers work and work out how they did it, how you can do something like it. work out what you like, what you don't like. Don't just stick to photographers shooting the same stuff as you, I look at a lot of Ad and fashion photographers work, I also look at a lot of videos, graphic design, listen to a LOT of music and generally surround myself with creative work of all types.

I will be doing another blog post soon on the photographers that inspire me, and some of my aspirations and how I went from shooting photos on my dads compact to making money doing what I love...

New Banshee Rune

If you know me personally you will know that for the last 10 months I have been with out a big bike. Its been horrible.

It died like many other bikes out in Morzine last summer, and with one thing and another its taken until now to get another one out on the tracks.

The bike in question is a 2011 Banshee Rune in team red, and I for one think its stunning.

I have always had DH bike, ridden mainly DH, but also ride a fair bit of XC...so wanted a bike that could do everything, but was better at going down hills than up them, and this bike ticked all the boxes.

Keith Scott and Banshee helped out a lot, as did the guys Lifer bmx, Dartmoor cycles, Madison and Silverfish, So thanks to all you guys for helping me put together such a sweet bike.

Using flash and typical lighting set ups...

One of the questions I seem to get asked a lot is how I use flashes. Typical placements, and powers and how to go about setting them up and using them properly.

Its like most things in life and photography, its practice. I use flashes on 80% of shoots I do, and that's pretty often, so for me anyways its almost instinct. I can rock up to a spot, take a look at the ambient light and guess what the flashes need to be pretty spot on first go.

So when I want to set up and strobed shot I do this:

Take a second to look around, work out where the sun is, what kind of terrain there is to work with
work out what lens to use, long, wide etc etc
work out what angle you want to shoot from
work out if you want a nicely balanced shot, so flash and ambient work together well, or if you want something more flash heavy.
Then get the flashes out of the bag.
Work out where you want light to fall on the rider/trail...put them where they need to be to do that.
Then work out zoom and power settings
then start shooting...

Something that not to many people seem to realise is that shutter speed only really affects ambient light , and not flash, and flash light is controlled in camera by the aperture.

So if you set up the flashes and they are a bit hot, go for a slightly higher Fstop, and in turn lower the shutter a bit. Or just go and turn the flash down... ha

Anyway now I will show you a few of my fav shots I have used flash on and tell you where and roughly the flash set ups for each shot.

A pretty balanced shot as far as lighting's concerned...one flash behind the tree in the center of the shot on about 1/16th power and pretty wide zoom. one flash just out of shot to the bottom left of the shot on about 1/4 and about 50mm zoom...

A more flash heavy image here. Flash behind the tree on the left of the image will have been wide and about 1/8th power. then flash just out of shot on the right on the same side of the track as me on about 1/8th and again wide.
This is a good example of using the sun as a natural rim light. Only one flash used just to the left of the camera, very zoomed in around 80-100mm and on about 1/4 power as I was about 20 feet from the rider.
Flash just out of shot to the right of camera , wide and about 1/16th power. Flash just out of shot to the left is about 6 foot lower down the landing, zoomed in to about 50mm and about 1/8th power. Sun as natural rim light.

Again a pretty balanced shot ( I tend to shoot this way ) Flash out of shot on the right is pretty zoomed in and on 1/16th power. Flash out of shot in the left is wider probs about 24mm and about 1/8th.

So the typical lighting set ups are normally 2 flashes. I have 3 but don't really use the 3rd as 2 well placed lights is normally enough and takes a 3rd of the time to set up.

You often see flashes in a diagonal line crossing the rider. One as Rim and one as main fill...That's a tried and tested set up that just works. But for more interesting shots, you need to think a bit more outside the box...

Try and guess the lighting set up for these ones, if any one guesses them I will send you a free print...

Some posh new business cards

I have been meaning to get some new business cards printed for about the last 6 months and never quite got round to it. So last week as part of my bi annual marketing brainstorm I finally bit the bullet and got some made up.

Anyway got them done on Moo, really happy with them, feel good, great quality printing...

I went for a bit of a pocket portfolio so I can give each individual person a card that most fits the kind of work they are enquiring about, all in about 100 different images on them, and then on the back all the boring stuff...

Gawton Summer Ride/550d Test

Last week I got a nice new toy, the Canon 550d! I know this may come as a shock to all who know me as a Nikon user, but the video the Canon shoots is just SO much better It was time I made the switch...

Anyway got myself an adapter from Ebay for 30 quid, so now my manual Nikon glass just slots right on.

So last week I was dieing to use it, so called up my mate/local/pinner Ash Mullane and hatched an idea for a video. Shoot only in the last hours of light all on good days on all the tracks at Gawton for a chilled summer riding vid...so that's just what we did...the blurb from Vimeo says it all really:

10 tips for manifesting Success

10. Be kind to yourself. It can be a big bad world out there and the last thing you need to do is stand in your own way. Besides, all good things in your life start from a friendship with yourself.

9. Keep your word. As well as keeping it, don't give it out so much.

8. Take care of your physical and mental health. Your body and mind are the primary tools of you soul's expression. You wouldn't believe it but I've met my fair share of overweight, unhealthy photographers who eat fast food, don't exercise but take immaculate care of their photo equipment. Weird.

7. Know your intention. Before you comment or act on anything in life; know your intention behind your words/action. Two identical actions can have very different intentions and very different effects.

6. Speak the truth. Tough one, but if you follow step #7 above, it shouldn't be too hard. Truth carries great power and weight and if you use it wisely you'll garner respect; most importantly for yourself.

5. Commit yourself to life long learning. Education didn't stop for me at university. In fact most of my greatest moments of learning came from outside an institution. Seek out your teachers carefully; they hide in some strange places.

4. Know where you've been. Honor your past and where you've come from. You may not be proud of where you've come from or what you've accomplished but as you learn to love and heal your life, you'll come to see it was all a necessary process.

3. Know where you're going. Visualize, but more importantly try to feel what it's going to be like once you reach your goal. That way, you're living your accomplishments now and not later

2. Sit in Silence everyday. Meditation works for all the points above, creating a space between sensory input and reaction. Its this space that differentiates the enlightened being from the Not. You chose the time and length.

1. Always try to work with people more accomplished and better than you. Surround yourself with Masters and with friends who have the same commitment to their craft as you do. This will aid in your progress.

Nothing to amazing work wise in this post im afraid, but if you ride and are reading this you will understand where im coming from though...

im always on the button bashing side of the lens, I ride a lot but you never get to see it, very few people do...

Anyway with all the sun this week, and the fact Tavistocks trails opened a few weeks ago I have been out riding trails on my bmx a fair bit the last week or so...

Riding I think is a big reason why my photos are the way they are, and it is the reason I started taking photos in the first place...

Very rough lid cam vid of all the lines down at our trails, free public trails in my town that a few mates and I got built... if your in devon or passing or coming to ride Gawton, stop by.

Also went on a bit of a riding day trip today to Exeter, 45 mins drive so not to far and some good trails and parks, got the camera out for a few mins, one nice snap of one of the locals Matt and a pic from the GoPro of me training my mate through them...

Saracen Photoshoot - Frames

On a photo shoot you only get to see as the outside viewer a tiny % of what gets shot...even the clients see very little.

There are so many photos that aren't quite as good as a similar one, lighting tests, trying angles out, Miss timed, out of focus etc that just sit on hard drives all over the world gathering digital dust.

In this video that was inspired by a video by Chase Jarvis I show you EVERY SINGLE image from a whole days photo shoot for Saracen Bikes.

The good ones, the bad ones, the ugly ones... and then a few of the results at the end...

So have a watch and get an idea of what really goes on...

Getting paid and how much

Getting paid is probably the subject I get asked most about... “How much for this?”, “How much that?” etc.

To be honest, it’s never an easy question to answer. How much a photographer should get paid really is one of those ‘how long is a piece of string?’ kind of questions!

First thing to say is:

Don't work for free, and never give up copy right, only sell usage rights.

There are a few things to consider when pricing a job though…

You should also factor in expenses but as a general rule of thumb - the more exposure your work gets the more you charge.

First of all, work out how much all of these factors are going to cost you the photographer:

Gear
Insurance
Petrol
Accommodation
food
time
usage

Total up all of these and the figure you get is your ballpark for a specific job.

Everything on that list is pretty set in stone other than the usage. Usage is the tricky part I’m afraid.

Where and how your work is used will all affect the price. Magazines, companies, video, stills, location etc all affect the price.

Generally, the more they use your shots – the more you should charge. For example, you would generally charge less for an image on a website than you would for a double spread in a magazine.

What about if a company doesn’t have a budget? In that situation you have a choice...

You can say “no thanks” and walk away which is the best thing to do a lot of the time

Or you can take the job because you really want to work with said client, shoot with the particular rider or the opportunity will get you shit loads of exposure. But, it’s always a trade off and you really want to be aiming to get paid. Getting paid pays the bills, fills up the car and keeps you in business.

At the end of the day if you always seem to have more money coming in than you have going out, you’re doing something right... If you don't, maybe give things a second thought!

Anyway here is a link that's great as getting a rough idea of the ball park, but consider this is based on very general pricing, every industry is different and every job is different...So if you have no idea at all have a look here then have a think about everything else... and then get ready to haggle a bit ha

Time usage and the hours involved...

This is the first in an on going series of blog posts where I will try to answer a few of the questions I get asked on an almost daily basis.

Everything from gear, the business side of things, technique etc I seem to attract a lot of questions, and rather than answer the same question 10 times over in the same month I thought I would just blog about them instead...

Right now that's said, this first post is on time usage and how long I spend doing what I do...

One of the best things about what I do is not being a slave to the 9-5 , when I'm out on a shoot its worse than that though , its more like 7-10 ha

If you want to get anywhere in such a competitive market you have to be willing to work your ass off...

( This is my Desk/Bedroom...as you can see this is a day when i have just come back from a trip, and getting ready for another one, so its a bit of a state...camera gear everywhere! )

In an average day at home I'm:

Up at 7-8am depending on if my phone bleeps with an urgent email...

8-10 is sat catching up on emails and urgent edits etc that have come in over night or from the previous evening

10-12 is keeping up to date with everything that's going on online on all the sites ( http://jacobgibbinsdotcodotuk.blogspot.com/2011/01/sites-i-visit.html ) and social networking ( http://jacobgibbinsdotcodotuk.blogspot.com/2011/02/social-media.html )

12 - is lunch, I'm a slave to my stomach ha i can tell when its 12 without a clock...

Then in the afternoon I either spend it editing photos/videos depending on what deadlines and work I have on, if I'm quiet though I just spend it bodging new camera toys, riding, shooting personal stuff, or working on my site/portfolio/blog etc

They say 10,000 hours at any one thing and you should be pretty much an expert and for me I would say that's nearing the truth...since 2005 I have spent almost all of my spare time buggering about with cameras, photo shop, websites etc , no shit almost every weekend for the last 5 years I have been in the outdoors taking photos, now I'm no mathematician but that has to be nearing those kind of hours...

You cant just coast, do a bit here, and bit there. To really get good at something you have to give your all to it.

So I guess the point I'm trying to make is, despite the rather lovely life I appear to lead managing to post up photos of me on the trails on a Tuesday morning...its not all it seems.

BDS 2 and the last few weeks...

First off sorry for not keeping this thing more up to date...but when your traveling about, shooting everyday and sleeping on peoples floors updating your websites pretty far down the list of things to do...

Anyway apology outa the way on to a bit of what i have been doing that's so busy...

Since the last post I have done a few shoots for Madison, MBR magazine, Dirt, few shoots for WO/Unior, shot for a few days with Josh Bryceland and Sam Dale been to Rd 2 of the BDS at Moelfre and covered more than 1000 miles in the polo in the process...

Anyway a few photos from all that...cant put to much up as its all going places ( keep an eye on the new MBR, Dirt, MBUK ,WO for some work from the last month...

Then off to Wales yet again for BDS rd 2 and Moelfre, sun was out, track was good, packed Field...and got a LOT of great photos, got some of my fave race shots from the last year or so...

In the last few months I have done a few shoot for the new Madison/Saracen team for use in Adverts in 2011... Anyway I have a few Peaks at some of the Ads here and thought I would show you the shots as I get them VS the Ads that go in the magazines...

First off is this shot of Harry Molloy riding the Myst DH bike on a shoot in South Wales before the season which is running in a few mags at the mo including the new Dirt...

This second shot is from BDS 1 in North Wales ( every things in Wales when it comes to DH bikes ) again of the Myst DH bike, not to sure on the rider as I cant see the number board and they all look the same on those bikes and kit...

And this is what one of the Ads using this shot looks like... There are a few different crops of it to fit different page layouts etc but again looks nice!
And one that we worked on last week down near Milton Keynes ( Woburn to be exact ) riding the Short trav AM bike the Ariel...

And how one of the crops of the Ad looks... Like I say there are a few different layouts of each Ad to work with different page layouts in mags. This is maybe my fav of the 3 here...not 100% on what mags its going to run in but at a guess MBR, Singletrack, MBUK, Dirt ???

Anyway got a busy week ahead of me next week doing some filming for WO for a few people then off to BDS rd 2 at Molefre...

Few sneaky peeks at recent work...

I am always sat on a whole load of nice photos. They just sit on my hard drives till the magazines/websites etc have published them, then I can put them online...

So I am sat on most of the shots from BDS 1, a good few from shoots for various companies, magazines etc all of while will surface sometime in the coming months...

Every few days though I take a photo of my PC as I'm working, and tweet the shots, these are little sneak peeks at what I'm working on, whats coming up etc

Madison/Saracen at BDS 1 - Vid and Photos

As you will know if you look at this blog and saw the last post, I was up at BDS 1 this weekend just gone.

Working mainly for the new 2011 Madison/Saracen team.

A big new pro team with 6 riders from youth right through to both men and women's elite.

Anyway just a round up of a bit of what I shot for them over the weekend both stills and video...

BDS Rd 1 Nant Gwrtheyrn

I have been pretty flat out the last week...hence the slight lack of posts.

Started off with a VERY early start last Thurs morning to head up to the Quantocks to do a shoot for MBR, then stay over night at camp Anderson, then off to Rd 1 of the BDS ( www.halobritishdownhillseries.com ) at Nant Gwrtheyrn in N.Wales.

A new venue for 2011, never been there before, great venue, good track, even better cafe.

1 day of dry weather, one of fucking piss...Hard work in that weather, especially when you have to shoot both stills and video for some of the biggest teams and magazines...so hard work but worth it.

Cant put to much online, or anything of anyone that got a top flight result, but here's a few teasers of the 2nd rate shots...

New Evoc camera bag to test / try...

I popped down to SilverfishUK down in Saltash this morning after getting a nice email from Pete Drew saying he had something for me...

A new Prototype camera bag from Evoc...

First time I saw Evocs stuff was at Euro bike last year and there bags for carrying bikes, suitcases, gear bags etc are all really well through through bits of kit...so the camera bag should be alright...

Anyway only had it for an hour or so so just check out all the pockets and straps etc

First few things I have noticed:

Big, Boxy and large
TONES of room for gear
Lacking padded laptop space
has enough straps for about 5000 tripods/spades/skis etc

Now When Pete asked me if I could do this I said yes of course, but its no secret I'm one of Fstop Gears staff togs along with the likes of Sven/Clay etc ( Weird hey!? ) and also have a really good relationship with the guys at Lowe Pro...So to be quite honest I'm all sorted as far as bags go...but I will give this one a try out in the woods, give it a hammering and report back to the people that be...

Anyway few photos of the new Evoc next to the bench mark for adventure camera backpacks the Fstop...

Here is the guts... you cant quite see how big the Fstop is as its crammed with all my gear, but they are about the same size....

The backs all done up, nothing to interesting here, the Fstops soft foam back is hard to beat...

And the fronts...the Evoc still looking new ( as you would expect ) and the Fstop looking a bit grubby as it gets used all the time and thrown around like a rag doll....

Full review on it in a week or so once I have had a real play...

This Sunday just gone I went down to Triscombe in the Quantoc hills in Somerset to film for DirtTV with 2 rippers Isaac and Joel.

They are 2 brothers that live in the middle of the woods, dad runs the uplift, they do tones of racing, are both rapid as shit...and nice guys to.

Bit of Devon XC

Over the past month or so me and my mate and fellow mountain bike videographer Mono ( the man behind footoutflatout and the MTBcut WC vids ) Have been going out and shoot photos on a few of the XC rides that are around the Tavistock area.

Needless to say if you have seen the photos below we live in a rather nice place to ride bikes. One shot is from a natural loop up on Dartmoor and the other from Gawton the trail center down here...

Anyway if you follow me on twitter ( @jacobgibbins ) you would have seen me tweet a sneak peak shot of a nice shot in the new issue of MBR from the same shoot as the Dartmoor shot below this morning...So thought I would pop up a couple of the other shots as they are just to nice to sit on my hard drive any longer ha

This First one was shot up above Burrator reservoir out near Pricetown.

Shot with the 80-200mm , in the late afternoon at the start of Feb...

The Second was taken a few weeks before the first shot out at Gawton the ever famous trail center and DH mecca down nr Tavistock. This shot was on the more XC track there HSD and also shot on the 80-200mm

Anyway , Ta to Mono for getting on his Orange 5 and giving me something to take photos of...and will get some more shots up soonish...Enjoy!

Blind Summit Kilimanjaro 2011 Video

Now this hasn't turned out anything like what I had planned when we started this whole thing...

But when your climbing a 20,000 ft mountain with your blind father, looking after him comes a few steps above shooting kick ass video...and as my dad was quite badly effected by the altitude on the trip the video on this trip took a big time back seat...

Any who, that's why its a bit sub par, and not what I'm sure you have come to expect from my lens...

But I think it gives you a good idea and a different angle on the trip, something the photos just couldn't...

Madison Saracen DH Team Launched

Now the 2011 Madison/Saracen team has been announced and on the big sites I feel OK saying I'm going to be working with the team with regards to all things media during the 2011 season both on the WCs with Harry and Manon and at the BDS races with the whole team.

Great team, Great people, Great bikes , Great company. Should be a good season...

Anyway the new team press release that hit all the big sites in the last week or so has a bit of my work in...some photos shot down at Madison HQ a month or so ago, A video shot over the day at HQ , and a few days in Wales riding with Harry and Manon.

Anyway I thought rather than have a gallery on my Flickr that was a bit clunky and slow I would put together a nice PDF photo book and get it up in Issuu.

With around 60 ish of the best images from the week, telling the story of the trip.

From sun sets to sun rises, from forests to glaciers to the people who made the trip you can see it all with some captions giving you a bit more of an insight in to the images.

I am back on UK turf!

For the last 2 weeks I have been out in Tanzania in East Africa climbing Mt Kilimanjaro ( the highest freestanding mountain in the world ) with my dad who is blind for RP...

Anyway 7 days of walking from 6am - 6pm...sleeping on weird slopes at 15,000+ feet, -20 temps, every possible climate zone under the sun etc all = one amazing week.

First and foremost was the total lack of tech and contact with the outside world which for me was very refreshing. Being out of contact with the whole world for a whole week was amazing itself without the mountain.

Anyway the photos...

Unsurprisingly an amazing place for photography, so varied, wild and stunning everywhere you look.

I also shot video so expect to see a short video documenting the trip in the coming weeks...but till then some photos...

This is only about a quarter of the images I got while up there...To see the rest of them check out the book im going to put together from the trip soon, more info at bottom of post...

As with most trips, it started on a plane...sunset somewhere over Europe...

On the first day we where there, we got this glimpse of the task ahead...looks pretty big eh! try 20,000 feet!
The bulk of the days where spent doing just this, walking. Its what we signed up for after all...
At the start of day 2 we broke out above the Forrest and had a day trekking through heath/moorland...
Our AMAZING guide Nelson...He made the trip that bit much more special, a new friend.
The weather up there was very fickle, clouds would move in and out with shocking pace

When you have to haul all your gear up that big hill for 6 days you start thinking about every little bit of gear...so I have slimmed down the bag from the full camera bag to the smaller Lowe Pro Nova 170 AW.

This is the one...The Lowe pro Nova 170 AW. Perfect for the job, belt loops on the back for the waist strap of the bag so its always there, quick to open buckle, AW cover for when shit goes south, tough enough that I'm not scared of it ripping all the time, and big enough to fit a fair amount of gear in! WIN WIN WIN

This is the gear that's inside that thing... and even though the bag my be small, as I don't want to get to the top and think " if only I had that lens" I am taking all my best glass...which isn't the lightest option...the bag still comes in at around 4.5 KG...that's very light for what it is, but its still a notable amount to carry up to that height...

Here is the gear then...In the front pocket you have the SLR Gorilapod, study enough for the d300s and 80-200 if needs be.

Social Media is such a vital tool for the modern Photographer/Filmer/Writer etc that if your not on it, your either just flat out amazing, or probably arnt doing to well...

There are a whole host of sites out there for you to use, all do slightly different things, and i know when it came round to starting using them all i was like " whats the point, FB seems to do 90% of what the others do ? " but its not quite that simple once you get in to it.

I will go through the list of the main places that I'm both active and social on the interweb, I have linked my profiles so you can see how I use them and what I use them for...

My Blog: I will spare you the link, as I'm pretty sure if your reading this you know how to get to it/here.

But this is the hub, this is where I try to get people to come to. The all social media for me is to get people to come to my blog or site and to see more of my work.

Twitter is a "micro Blogging site" which means in use full terms its like Fb but you only get the status updates...but its so much more than that!...

Its much more professionally minded than FB, full of networking, sharing videos,photos,inside info much more. for eg I post up a lot of sneak peaks of what I'm working on twitter...

The way its users interact is also much more social in that every time you comment on anything you have to link back to where you got the info from...once you get a half decent number of followers ( I'm no where near yet ha ) its a very use full tool...

Flickr is the home of a more specific community on the web based around photography.

A vast number of photographers from pros to amateurs use it, post photos daily most of the time, comment on others, it has groups like most other formats of social media etc

Youtube, the home of Danny macs 20 odd Million hit video. There is only one place on the the Internet where that can happen to a video...YT.

With pretty much the whole Internet savvy world using it to watch people falling in to ponds and hurting themselves its the perfect place for bikes...It have a very active user base though, you get comments, lots of views etc all very fast. Its also rather neutral in terms of other bike industry sites so they wont mind linking to it. ( for eg if you ask vital to post up a video that's only online via pinkbike, they probably wont )

Vimeo is much the same as YT but more professional, full of the kind of people who make the TV shows you watch, the adverts you see on TV, the films in the cinema. so it has a smaller user count than youtube, but the videos are better quality, its a nicer interface, and you get more use full comments and criticism. rather than a vid shouting YEEEEY! you get someone telling you that your colours are a bit out and how to fix them, or that they like it and the music choice works with the mood of the footage really well...you get the idea!

Now Bike sites...There are 3 main ones that are much more social than others...

I have listed them in order of which I personally consider the most active and social. Pinkbike is the largest ( by some way I believe ) bike site in the world, and therefore its of little surprise that its the most used and active site of the 3.

But the users tend to be younger, less well educated, and give feedback of very little real world worth POD! doesn't tell you much about your work other than they liked it which is still good to know....

Mpora and Vital are better on that front but still not anywhere close to Flickr and Vimeo...

You then have the whole list of other sites for news etc which I touched on in a post on sites I visit a few weeks back: http://jacobgibbinsdotcodotuk.blogspot.com/2011/01/sites-i-visit.html

So to recap...lots of sites, all doing very similar things just with slight differences, and rather annoyingly as I'm sure you can gather by how I have profiles on them all, you should use them all and update them all regularly...

The more places your video is, the more likely it is to get a lot of views, and views = money ( that's another post all together )

So for me it goes something like this...post of a sneak peak while working on something on twitter, which gets auto fed in to my FB news feed.

then a few weeks later when I can upload the work to Flickr, my Blog,Pinkbike,Youtube,Vimeo,Mpora,vital etc then link it all about via twitter and Facebook. That's it put simply.

Anyway that sums up this post, hopefully you should have a better idea of what its about, what it can do for you and how to use it...its a bit of hastle, but its marketing for very little cost or time, and when you think of it like that it seems to make a bit more sense...

Si is an expert level racer from Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast, works for a building firm during the week to pay for the van and so he can race most weekends. Adam Brayton - Pre Season video...

A month or so ago my mate and totally pinner Adam Brayton called me up and asked if he could come down and stay with me for a few days after new years and do some shooting and ride down my way. I said yes of course, and that weekend was the one just gone.

2 full days shooting, got some great stuff, sent some big gaps, hit some turns so hard I thought he would break the ground...but the final product can be seen bellow.

The video is also on youtube,pinbike,mpora,vital so go find it on there and add it to your favs, if you liked it that is.

I got a good number of great still shots aswell while he was down, but Dirt are interested in running a few so they cant go online just yet...but when they do there are a few differant looking shots in there.

I have tweeted over the past few days with some shots of my pc as ive been working on the shots, see the twitter bar over here -----> keep an eye on that, or follow me on there @JacobGibbins

First sneak peek shot is a flashed sequence shot on the big step down at 3:10 in the video...

The gap for mere mortals is about 25 feet, but where most people are just rolling, Brayton was on the gas as hard as he could and said he wanted to build the turn in to this in to a nice smooth berm so he could go even further...to where he was landing was a good 40-50 foot! keep an eye on the blog and my facebook and twitter for when this shot goes online high res...its a good un.

I also tried something a bit different, the walls in my dinning room are nice and white, So thought we would shoot some high key , studio style portraits of him and his bike, I cant put any other shots up as again , Dirt want them, but when I can I have some set up shots of the lighting and the whole room so you can see just how these shots where made with such a shitty set up...

Orange bikes 2011 Brochure

Back in October I went up to south Wales for a few days shooting with Rowan Sorrel the man who has built most of the trail centers in Wales and also rides for Orange Bikes to shoot some stuff for there new 2011 brochure of a few bikes ( ST4 and missile )

Anyway been waiting a while for the new brochure to come out, and makes its way down to me, but now it has I can do a blog post on the shots they used, plus a few of the ones that didn't quite make it in...

First a bit about the days shooting. We ( Rowan and I ) had decided we needed some trails to shoot the Mii on, and some nice single track xc with good views for the ST4.

So on day 1 we went to a few spots over looking the Severn bridge, and also to some lesser known parts of Cwm Carn, then on Day 2 went a bit further a Field over to west Wales to a trail center he built that has some stunning views and sections of single track, and also to the trails down in Swansea...Anyway I will show you the shots I took, and how they looked in the brochure, then a few shots from the shoot that didn't quite make it in...

This is the shot that ran for the Mii, shot down at Moos trails in Swansea, on a Nice hip, 2 flashes...

This is one of the shots that they have used most both in the brochure, the website and in adverts that ran in MBUK and DIRT...

This is another one that ran for the ST4 but this time as a full page...

I’ve been wanting to shoot something a bit different to the normal MTB web videos for a a while.

I look at a lot of BMX sites and blogs and the videos on them are more about getting to know the riders themselves than just showing off their riding. So over this off season I’ll be doing a few short 2-3 minute videos with random riders of all ages and abilities to just get to know why people ride, what they gets from it etc.

So the first video in this series is with South West local and pinner Adam Price, watch the video, look at the photos, get an idea of who he is and watch him shred his local trails 10 mins from his house.

All the work I do for WideOpenMag.co.uk/ throughout the season was rewarded with a nice end of year bonus/thank you a few weeks ago when this little beauty turned up on my door.

Dialled bikes http://www.dialledbikes.com are long term friends of the magazine and make some of the best hardcore all round mountain bike hard tails out there. First impressions are great, really nice looking frame prime for long distance riders and aggressive trail riding, super light weight, amazing attention to detail, slick dark red metallic paint job.

Someone just sent me a message asking me a few things about starting in photography and I kind of just wrote an answer without thinking, just went for it...read it back and thought it was worthy of sharing with more people than just the person who sent the question...

I'm at that stage where you don't know what to do as a career, and photography is one of the things I am into and enjoy doing and think I would enjoy as a career.

Could you please tell me what the best way into photography would be and how hard it is to build up a client list like yours (I have seen it via your website).

I myself am only just starting out in this whole photography thing in the grand scheme of things but so far I can tell you its damn hard work, and has very little or no job security, has very long hours, and you need to be willing to get up at 4am and sit in the rain till 8pm for very little money,its SUPER competitive and only getting worse and unless you are really good, and have more enthusiasm,drive,skill,and business acumen than the million other you's out there you wont succeed. Its a very hard time to be a photographer right now.

But on the flip side, Its also one of the most exciting times, for me this is my dream job and I love every second of it, I wouldn't be doing anything else in the world.

As for how to get in to it, Get out and shoot the best stuff you can, share the best of the best online, and when you get good enough doors will start opening, if they don't maybe think again about it as a job, and keep it as a hobby?

And to get a clients list like mine has taken 2 years full time, 3 years before then doing it every waking moment god gave me for nothing more than the love of it, and 2 years before that playing about with cameras. The clients just come as you get better.

Camera bag showdown...

I have a few different camera bags, from small ones that just hold my camera and a lens, and 3-4 backpacks...This is just a short blog post summing up what I think of 3 of the most used bags I own.

They have all been used in anger, some for longer than others, some are better, some worse...read on to see which one I prefer for what...

First Off is the F-Stop Gear Satori.

This is my Fav bag of the 3, its my work horse and has never been anything other than perfect if not better for the job than I thought possible.
Carrying a bag full of gear can get heavy, when traveling the bag can weigh around 40 Lb's and that's a lot, but in this bag it feels half that thanks to the big soft padded straps and internal Alu framing.

Put this with padded laptop pouch, side pouches, top space great for drink/coat/cables etc, the fact its rear loading so you don't get your back all wet and dirty putting it down in the woods , non rip fabric which trust me, I have tested, its water resistant more than you will ever need, and again trust me, I have tested this, has a totally removable internal camera unit ( a small padded camera bag inside the main bag, see there site for more info on it ) which is very useful in some situations.

The padding is all very soft, in the right places, and the bag is still very light which is good news when you need to get on a plane with a bag that's already 2 times more than your allowed ( could do a whole other post on how to cheat your way through airports but like I say, another post entirely)

The second of the bags that I use on a regular basis is the Lowe Pro Flipside 500 AW

Now this is a Pro only bag which I was given as part of a group of Togs to test, but you can buy a slightly smaller version of this ( the 400, see link above ) in any good camera store.

Its a bit smaller than the Fstop, a little less comfy for hiking in, a few less straps for really tying down tripods etc if you need to ride with it. Basically its more of a bag for short walks, taking round towns, cities, internal jobs, portrait shoots, and it was the bag I used and was perfect for EuroBike.

It is rear loading like the Fstop so when you put it down in the woods you don't get your back all wet and muddy, non rip, had the all weather ( AW ) cover, a strap on the front for A tripod. Like I say, the bag I use when I'm not shooting Bikes, or need something that's a bit neater and doesn't look like I'm about to go up Everest.

This is A bag I don't use anymore, and is in fact up for sale ( email me if your interested )

I got this bag when my first bag ( A Lowe Pro photo Trekker ) just got a bit small for my growing amount of gear I needed to take on shoots.

I just needed a cheap, big, sturdy bag which is just what this is. Its pretty huge, and It says its hand luggage for planes, which it is, I have taken it on Sleazy jet flights, but if you can get it in to the little cages at sign in, you are a better man than I.

The bag does what its meant to, it doesn't do it well, its not very comfy, heavy, doesn't use the space it has well with very thick walls...

BUT! Its cheap, and HUGE. If I ever needed to take lots of gear on a shoot abroad both video and photo so Dollys, Video and photo Tripods, reflectors etc Then Its a bag like this that you could ram full and put as hold luggage that would be useful as you know with its bulk and padding your gear should be safe.

Anyway That sums it up in short...

For anything where your out in the woods shooting, or will be carrying the bag for any length of time, or when looks aren't important, then this is THE bag. Its amazing in every way and just look at the Fstop Team on there site if you need anymore people telling you how good they are, really amazing.

The Lowe pro is a bit neater, good for commercial portrait shoots, weddings etc, or going on holiday and going sight seeing in cities.

The Tamrac...the cargo plane, big, burly but not a touch on either of the others...

The new WO mag is out now, and another bumper issue full of MTB goodness...including a fair few shots from yours truely...Here are just a few of my shots in the new issue and a little bit of info on them...

This shot is of elite racer Rob Smith at the 2010 finals of the BDS races pinning through the root and stump fest of a top section, just one of those shots where the riders body possition, good light , and good comp says it all.

This is the Cover for issue 14, and its Sam Dale smashing in to a little rut we found, you have no idea how hard they where smashing in to this but you can get an idea from how aggresive his body position is.

Theres a new bike website sprung up a few weeks ago called Factory Jackson

And I have been involved in getting some shots together for a few interviews and a few other projects in the pipeline with these guys.

Anyway the site takes great content on bmx, mtb , moto , clothes, art, just all good stuff really, in a nice neat site, with lots of great new parts of the site going live soon.

Anyway in the past week the have put up a few interviews with both Josh Bryceland and Danny Hart both of which have a good ammount of my work in...

Anyway I havnt stopped shooting for that project just yet...

WideOpenmag want to run a more full story on it all so im still shooting some fresh stuff over the next few weeks for that.

So went down the woods today with local hero Mullane and a load of the other local pinners and shot some stuff, im really happy with how most of them turned out, to see the rest of them you will have to keep an eye on the next WO, but here 2 to have a cheeky peek at...

Local Scene photo essay on pinkbike...

Over the past few months on spare days, days out riding etc I have taken the camera out and shot some photos with a photo essay about riding in the Tamar Valley in mind.

Anyway the last week I have finished shooting enough to put together a good article, I will carry on shooting for it and there will be a full written up article plus some fresh work in the next issue of WideOpen mag.
